Full respray or panel refinishing: how is the scope decided?
A full respray is not automatically the right answer to every paint problem. The condition of the existing finish, the number of affected areas and the result wanted from the vehicle all influence the discussion.
Start with why refinishing is being considered
Local damage, peeling lacquer, widespread fading, a colour change and restoration work are different starting points. Each can lead to a different amount of preparation and refinishing.
Count affected areas, but also check their condition
The number of panels matters, but so do earlier repairs, coating stability, chips, dents and differences between adjacent panels. These details cannot be reduced to a simple panel count.
Agree the intended result
A repair to a defined damaged area and a wider appearance-led project have different aims. The expected outcome should be discussed before the work is specified.
Inspect before deciding
Photographs are useful for the first conversation. A vehicle inspection may still be needed before preparation, refinishing area, quotation and timing can be confirmed.
