Bumper scuff, crack or distortion: what changes the repair?

Bumper damage is often described as one problem, but a surface scuff, split material and a bumper that has changed shape are not the same. The visible finish is only one part of the assessment.

A scuff may still involve several coating layers

A light-looking mark can include transferred material, scratches or damage through the painted finish. The depth and spread need to be checked before preparation and refinishing are decided.

Cracks need more than a surface view

The crack position, length, material condition and any missing material matter. Damage near an edge, bracket or mounting point may need a different decision from damage across a clear central area.

Distortion can point to a wider impact

If the bumper has changed shape or no longer sits correctly, the fit, attachments and nearby components should be inspected. One close-up photograph may not show the full extent.

Repair or replacement is decided after assessment

No single rule applies to every bumper. The aim is to establish an appropriate repair scope for that bumper, rather than assume that every mark can be treated in the same way.

Common questions

Can every cracked bumper be repaired?

No. The material, crack position, distortion, attachments and overall condition must be assessed first.

Should I send a photograph of the whole bumper?

Yes. Include the whole bumper, close-ups of the damage and views of the bumper edges and adjoining panels.
